Founded in 2007, the Refurbished Pets of Southern Michigan (RPSM) works hard to save animals from euthanasia through fostering, adoption, and their Correctional Companion Program.
Pawstruck has been fortunate enough to have a volunteer from the shelter, Jessie W., bring RPSM to our attention and teach us more about this charitable organization.
About Refurbished Pets of Southern Michigan (RPSM)
RPSM is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization funded by donations located in Coldwater, Michigan. They service the Southern Michigan and Northern Indiana area and their contact information is listed at the bottom of this article.
Correctional Companion Program
RPSM works with the Coldwater Prison Complex to pair prescreened dogs with specially trained inmates that are responsible for their dog’s training and daily care. The dogs are screened to check their temperament, trainability, and prior to enrollment in the program they are spayed or neutered and fully vaccinated. During the 10-week long training program, the specially trained inmates teach their dogs basic commands and tricks to help them find their forever homes. Upon graduation from the program, the dogs receive a Canine Good Citizen Certificate (CGC) and are available for adoption. The program helps increase the chances of a dog finding a new home, those families get a trained dog, and allows inmates to learn a new skill. Since it’s inception, over 500 dogs have been given a second chance and saved from euthanasia.
